Halifax-based EastMed Inc. brings home a gold medal in medical design

Wednesday, June 4, 2008

EastMed Inc. was awarded a gold medal today at the 2008 Medical Design and Manufacturing East Conference held in New York.

The uresta® Continence Care kit, which was launched less than a year ago in Atlantic Canada, was awarded the 2008 Medical Design Excellence Award (MDEA) in recognition of its innovative design for women who suffer with Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI).

“This is very exciting and satisfying for us,” said Dr. Scott Farrell, VP Medical of EastMed Inc. and Head of the Urogynaecology division at the IWK Health Centre.

“It validates what we believed we had accomplished when we designed uresta® Continence Care, which was to develop an exceptional product and management option for women with SUI.”

The MDEA competition is the only awards program that exclusively recognizes contributions and advances in the design of medical products in areas such as:

  • innovative use of materials;
  • user-related functions that improve healthcare delivery and change traditional medical attitudes or practices;
  • features that provide enhanced benefits to the patient; and
  • the ability of the product development team to overcome design and engineering challenges to meet clinical objectives.

EastMed Inc. is based in Halifax, Nova Scotia and is dedicated to inventing and bringing to market medical innovations for women's health and wellness.  EastMed Inc. has received ISO certifications; standards of quality recognized and respected throughout the world.
